5 Tips to Emotionally and Mentally Prepare for Public Speaking

creativityPublic Speaking can be scary. It takes a lot of confidence and reassurance to succeed in giving a killer speech and vocalizing your ideas in front of a large audience. Amanda Hennessey, author of YOUR GUIDE TO PUBLIC SPEAKING, shares her 5 tips to emotionally and mentally prepare with speaking in public. 

Here are some elements to consider integrating into your prep time if possible. They can help you feel calmer or more energized, depending on what you need at the moment.

#1. Surround yourself with positive energy.

When you are feeling overwhelmed or defeated, emotional support from caring and encouraging friends, family, and colleagues will help buoy your spirits and get you back on track.

#2. Ask for help.

Intellectual and creative support from trusted friends, family, and colleagues can make obstacles easier to overcome and tricky subjects simpler to master.

#3. Get regular exercise.

Exercise is a great stress reliever! Vigorous exercise is helpful for releasing tension and endorphins (chemicals that trigger feelings that are positive). Options like yoga and Pilates are great for breathing, concentration, strength, and meditation. Walks in nature can be calming as well.

#4. Take breaks.

Just as your body needs rest to recover after an intense workout, your brain also needs breaks. You can probably tell when you have pushed yourself as far as you can mentally. You feel fried, you’re not able to focus as well, and you see diminishing returns in terms of results. That’s when a break will help you and your project.

#5. Do all you can to get enough sleep.

You will function at a much higher level—thinking more clearly and creatively—when you get enough sleep. Plus, you will manage your stress better! A great book on the critical importance of sleep is The Sleep Revolution by Arianna Huffington (who collapsed from exhaustion and burnout, which spurred her to explore this topic).
