Everyone CAN Wear a Pencil Skirt: Here’s How

pencil patternThe pencil skirt may be redolent of the Mad Men era, but the shape and style is still very current. Do not let the pencil skirt intimidate you. It isn’t the uniform for the secretary pool anymore; it’s as wearable all year round as your favorite jeans.

We found this great McCalls 1950s pencil skirt pattern on Etsy and it reminded us of just how timeless this wardrobe staple can be.

Sure, the pencil skirt may seem like a conservative fashion choice but because it hugs your curves, but it’s probably the sexiest piece in your closet. It also works for any occasion, from a job interview to a first date or even an evening out with the ladies.

Another bonus: Pencil skirts in mini, mid, or maxi length are a wearable essential for all seasons. OK, maybe the fabrication will change—you’re certainly not donning a lightweight cotton pencil in the dead of winter nor a tweed ensemble in July-—but the silhouette is a year-round classic.

Pair a pencil skirt with a tank and sandals in the spring, with a slicker and wellies in the rain or layer up with tights, an oversized sweater and riding boots in the blistering cold.

Our favorite outfit keeps it classic with a black J.Crew pencil skirt and Cashmere boyfriend sweater, concealed wedge Lanvin knee-boots (if you happen to have an extra $1,200 burning a hole in your wallet,) a plaid and stripe scarf with accompanying nail polish gloves from Marc by Marc Jacobs, sunglasses from Club Monaco, and and a heavyweight leather coach bag. If the ultra-basic color story is lacking, you can add a little pop color with a hot red lipstick.

As always, J.Crew is the master of yet another wardrobe staple (despite CEO Mickey Drexler’s admission this past June that the brand has strayed from their classics and brand message.) Their No.2 Pencil skirt collection is a no-brainer.

J.Crew Scalloped Lace Pencil (left) is for post-work weeknight holiday parties or you can wear a simple black Italian stretch wool pencil casually with a striped tee. Then there is the upscale work-appropriate green No.2 pencil. Another great look is the chambray shirt and pinstripe pencil or a patterned Jacquard pencil.
