A Guide to Personal Growth

Self-improvement is a part of the journey of life. Sara Katherine, author of I’M AWESOME HERE’S WHY… shares some advice on personal growth and how you can challenge yourself to become better everyday.

No one’s perfect. Even your biggest role model isn’t perfect. In fact, there is not a single person in this world who can’t grow and improve in some way in his or her life. This shouldn’t discourage you in any way, but help you understand that you’re not alone in this journey. The more you grow and improve, the more confident and awesome you’ll feel about yourself. There are so many ways you can seek out self-improvement and growth.

Some examples include:

  • Books
  • Blogs
  • Podcasts
  • Online courses
  • Community classes

If you’re new to the self-help realm, it can be difficult to figure out exactly where to start and what to focus on. Good news, though: you bought this book! You’re already ahead of the game: you’ve started your personal growth journey!

Something to keep in mind about self-help and personal development is that there really isn’t an “end goal.” You’re never officially “done” growing. Don’t let this intimidate you! This just means that there are always opportunities to learn throughout your wonderful life. Each lesson you learn helps build the layers of who you are and what you can accomplish.

At some point during your journey, you’ll find yourself in the “I don’t have anywhere to grow” trap. You will have overcome personal struggles, landed a solid job you enjoy, and found amazing people who support you along the way. You’ll feel like you’ve made it—what else is there for you to work on? You don’t need personal development anymore. Clearly you have everything figured out. Boy, is this wrong. Even when you achieve your most challenging goals, you’ll eventually start feeling stuck and unfulfilled. What you don’t realize is that there are so many ways you can continue growing to avoid feeling stuck. You can invest more time in a hobby you love, start learning something new, create a consistent exercise routine and schedule, or look into planning and saving for brand-new travel experiences.

Life doesn’t just stop once you hit your goals. Allowing yourself to plateau is simply accepting that you can’t do anything else. Honestly, this sounds pretty boring. Wouldn’t you rather continue to learn and grow? The journey is the most exciting place to be: it’s where you experience the most fulfilling and enriching times in your life. When you reach your goal, celebrate, but don’t stop there! You are capable of so much more. Imagine how much more confident you’ll feel each time you learn more about yourself and what you can accomplish.
