When Dr. Eben Alexander told the story of his near-death experience it resonated with readers all over the world, propelling his first book Proof of Heaven to the top of the bestseller list. Previously a non-believer, today Alexander is a doctor who believes that true health can be achieved only when we realize that God and the soul are real and that death is not the end of personal existence, but only a transition.
A highly trained neurosurgeon, Alexander knew that NDEs feel real, but are simply fantasies produced by brains under extreme stress. Then, Dr. Alexander’s own brain was attacked by a rare illness. The part of the brain that controls thought and emotion—and in essence makes us human—shut down completely. For seven days he lay in a coma. Then, as his doctors considered stopping treatment, Alexander’s eyes popped open. He had come back.
Alexander’s recovery is a medical miracle. But the real miracle of his story lies elsewhere. While his body lay in coma, Alexander journeyed beyond this world and encountered an angelic being who guided him into the deepest realms of super-physical existence. There he met, and spoke with, the Divine source of the universe itself.
Tips on Life & Love spoke to Dr. Alexander about his life-altering experience, and some of the lessons he is sharing through his new online course with Karen Newell (co-founder of Sacred Acoustics), Attuning to Your Inner Wisdom.
Before your near-death experience (NDE), did you ever believe any of the people sharing their experiences?
I paid very little attention to such stories because I believed that the brain creates consciousness and therefore, those stories didn’t mean anything deeper. I thought they were valid experiences that were tricks of the dying brain and paid it no mind.
Why do you think so many people have similar out-of-body experiences, despite completely different physical circumstances bringing them to near death?
The realm beyond this one is more real than what we experience here in this material existence, so it should be no surprise that similarities of people’s experiences far outweigh the differences because we’re referring to a real realm.
How did your NDE change your relationship with your loved ones? With your profession?
The most fundamental change was coming to realize that we are all truly eternal spiritual beings that are all connected through one consciousness and that we are all participants in the overall evolution of consciousness. This allows me to have a far broader perspective and to fully appreciate the multiple incarnations we all experience and how our journeys are deeply interwoven. I’ve come to see hardships and difficulties, including illness and injury, as gifts that allow for the progression of our souls.
If there is one piece of advice you could give a person with a skeptical mind about the existence of God and an afterlife, what would you share?
All of our modern culture’s scientific notions of reductive materialism, i.e. that brain creates consciousness, are false assumptions. The skeptical mind needs to realize that this assumption, which is all-permeating, is not proven, there is absolutely nothing there that supports it. A broader, open-minded outlook is necessary to get to fundamental truths of our reality.
What, in your opinion, is the meaning of our life on earth? What will happen if we destroy our earth and its resources, as some scientists claim we will do in the next few generations?
This is soul school, this is where sentient beings participate in the evolution of consciousness, temporarily dumbed down on this side of the veil. Planetary suicide is not the correct action for us to be taking at this point in the development of humanity. I am optimistic about this—I fully believe we will rise above all the apparent darkness and evil as we begin to awaken to our true nature as eternal beings.
Please tell us a little bit more about Sacred Acoustics, and how they can improve the quality of a person’s life.
I encourage all souls to develop a practice of meditation, of going deep within in order to connect to a more expanded awareness which is available to us all. Sacred Acoustics recordings are my preferred method of meditation since they allow for a deeper connection than when I meditate without listening. This deeper connection allows for a broader perspective of life issues and a mind state that supports intention and connection to what is beyond our daily activities. Each individual is unique and thus will discover unique experiences.
Does meditation truly help lower anxiety and stress? What if you’re too distracted to focus? How can tones help put you in a meditative zone?
There are many studies available that show a regular practice of meditation can lower stress and anxiety. Many who have trouble with quieting the mind find benefit from Sacred Acoustics brainwave entrainment recordings because they help settle the chattering voice in our heads, providing an opportunity for a more objective perspective. That constant voice in our heads is NOT our consciousness, [and] developing an awareness of the observer of that voice is what has the potential to begin great benefits.
