Ever wonder if you should be doing more for your environment, family, friends, or community? There are so many opportunities for you to make a difference in the world! Amy Neumann, author of SIMPLE ACTS TO CHANGE THE WORLD, shares her ideas on how you can make a difference in the world today.
#1: Take a cooking class, then share what you learn. Freshly prepared food can save time, money, and resources, and supports your community when locally grown items are included. Cooking classes (or online videos) can also give you new ideas for vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, nondairy, and regional or cultural meals that help you learn about your area and help more neighbors feel included in meals.
#2: Walk a shelter dog. Many animal shelters can use dog walkers. Walking dogs helps them burn off energy, mix with other dogs, and feel loved. There are also opportunities to help process adoptions, socialize animals, or tidy up the shelter. Show some puppy love!
#3: Register as an organ donor. This simple act could save multiple lives!
#4: Speak up when someone makes an offensive remark or joke.
#5: Start or join a running, walking, or hiking club in your community. In addition to being good exercise, it will give you time to chat with new people on a regular basis. You can learn more about them and about the places you run, walk, or hike. Connecting with neighbors and exploring local areas creates a sense of community and an appreciation for one another, as well as the places you share!
#6: Go “plogging”: picking up litter while exercising outside. Grab a bag, and pick up stray trash as you go! If you’re in a running, walking, or hiking group, ask everybody to join in on the next run, walk, or hike.
#7: Do a random act of kindness for three people, and suggest that they pay it forward to three more people. The ripple effect adds up fast!
