Parents are the real heroes out there in the world. They do all of the cooking, cleaning, scheduling, and caring surrounding a child’s day to day life. Rickey Smiley, author of STAND BY YOUR TRUTH, shares his thoughts on how children should say thanks for the little things their parents do for them.
I know a lot of you have young parents who are in their thirties or forties, and you can’t imagine their not being around. But it’s not guaranteed that your parents are going to always be here. As a matter of fact, the sure thing is that one day they won’t be. When that time comes, I don’t want you to have any regrets. I don’t want you to wish that you’d shown them more respect. I don’t want you to wish that you’d done more to acknowledge the support they gave and the sacrifices they made going to work every day to give you everything.
“Honor thy mother and thy father, that thy days may be long upon the land.”
That’s in the Bible. While you’re young, you have plenty of time to change your behavior, to refocus your path, and to do what is right. I’m asking you teenagers who sit at the kitchen table talking into your phones instead of to the person sitting right beside you to put down your devices and pay attention to your parents. You might learn something. I’m telling you young people who spend half of your days immersed in video games to set aside the consoles and hug your mom and dad. You might be surprised by how good that makes you feel.
Try to make the best grades you can. Clean up your room without having to be told to do it a dozen times. Volunteer to help your parents make dinner, or, better yet, prepare the whole meal and give them a treat when they get home from work. And if you can’t do anything else, show your parents, and all your elders, the respect that they deserve.
Honor thy mother and thy father, that thy days may be long upon the land. They’ll appreciate you for it, and trust me, you’ll be glad that you took the time to show how much you appreciate them.
