I naturally have dry skin, and my thyroid problem hasn’t helped. Now that I’m in my forties, I want to take particular care of my skin to minimize wrinkles and fine lines.
My favorite skin care product is the Ole Henriksen Micro/Mini Peel System, a three-step process that includes a scrub, a serum, and a calming cream. I do this at least every week to keep my skin in good shape.
I also use Peter Thomas Roth facial cleansers morning and night, and I always moisturize afterward. My favorite is Kiehl’s facial moisturizer; they have a regular version for night and one with sun protection for the daytime. (Speaking of which—never go out without sunscreen on your face! It’s a key to keeping young-looking skin!)
Mary and I are both fans of a relatively new product called NeriumAD. Derived from an extract of the oleander plant, it dramatically improves fine lines, crow’s-feet, frown lines, and marionette lines, as well as tightening pores and improving skin texture. In Mary’s case, she eliminated two deep vertical frown lines, and a deep horizontal forehead line in less than two months. For me, just a few days, and my skin tightened up amazingly. Who needs Botox?
The most popular moisturizer by far according to our thyroid community members is the CeraVe lotions and creams, which are not expensive and available at drugstores. They were frequently mentioned as being especially effective for dryness all over the body, including the feet. Coconut oil used externally is also popular with thyroid patients.
Some other dry skin tips:
• “Especially in the winter, I don’t use very hot water when I shower. When I turn off the water, I grab the baby oil and apply it all over while I’m still wet. Do not rinse, just towel off. Then I use Bath & Body Works body butter. I don’t have dry or itchy skin, and it stays soft all day and night. It’s the best way to combat my dry skin!”—Michelle

Dry lips are also a common problem.
