19 Simple Secrets for a Great Metabolism

Aloe_Drink_400These tips from Healthy Happy Sexy: Ayurveda Wisdom for Modern Women will help you boost, or at least balance, your metabolism. Pick one or two things on the list to incorporate into your lifestyle, and when they feel like second nature, incorporate a few more.

• Drink a cup of warm lemon water first thing in the morning. About one quarter of a medium-sized lemon in a normal coffee cup full of water will suffice.
• Avoid breads, pastries, cookies, cakes, all fried foods, cheese, canned and processed foods, leftovers, nuts, alcohol, sugar, and pasta.
• Eat your main meal at lunch. This is when your metabolic fire is strongest!
• Eat dinner around 6:00 pm. Eat a light dinner of steamed veggies, rice, and/or a warm bowl of soup.
• Cook with spices that boost digestion: dried or fresh ginger, fennel, black pepper, cayenne, mint, rock salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, dill, turmeric, cumin, coriander, and ajwan seeds. These spices not only help us digest and absorb, they also help pull toxic sludge out of the system.
• Avoid snacking between meals.
• Eat a thin slice of fresh ginger before meals. Add a pinch of rock salt and a spray of fresh lemon or lime juice.
• Eat only until three-quarters full.
• Don’t ever (ever, ever) drink ice water with meals. Avoid drinking large quantities of liquid with your meals. Why would you throw ice and lots of water on a fire?
• Drizzle ¼ teaspoon of olive oil or ghee (clarified butter) on your meal before eating it.
• When using grains, nuts, seeds, lentils, and rice, it’s best to soak them at least 30 minutes before cooking. Some harder beans may be soaked overnight. Cook them with spices such as ginger, black pepper, asafetida, or even a little seaweed. These spices help prevent gas and bloating, and make them easier to digest.
• Throw out your white table salt. It is full of poisons—chemicals that leach nutrition out of your bones. Only use real, unprocessed salts like sea salt and Himalayan rock salt.
• Drink more digestive teas like ginger, cardamom, fennel, cumin, and coriander.
• Drink ¼ cup of organic aloe vera juice in the morning and in the evening before bed. This is highly purifying and helps boost the body’s ability to assimilate the nutrients in food.
• Consider taking ½–1 teaspoon of triphala powder before bed. This fruit-based powder scrapes the intestines of sludge. It also helps restore proper peristaltic action in the bowels.
• Do a simple kitchari cleanse with a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner.
• Eat more of these metabolism-boosting foods: soups, most spices, garlic, leafy greens, olive oil, limes, oatmeal, apples, pears, grapefruit, green tea, tomatoes, broccoli, celery, parsley, nettles, turmeric, beets, fennel, carrots, fresh ginger, and mung beans.
• Avoid these, always and forever: anything that says “low fat,” “no fat,” or “sugar free.” The natural fats and sugars in these foods have usually been replaced with love-killing chemicals. Eliminate white sugar and table salt; all chemically treated, genetically modified, hormone-pumped, chemically fed, chemically preserved or processed, irradiated foods; artificial sweeteners and colorants; food fried in old oils; trans fats; and fat substitutes like margarine and shortening.
• Go organic! Not only do pesticides and GMO-modified foods dampen digestion, they have also been shown to cause nervous system imbalances, neurological deficits, cancer, hormonal disruption, severe and moderate mental imbalances, ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) and endocrine system disorders.
